The Commonwealth Police (FCT) was established in 1927 to take over policing duties in the Federal Capital Territory from the NSW Police. When the Federal Capital Territory was renamed the Australian Capital Territory in 1938, the police force changed its name to the Commonwealth Police (ACT). In 1957, after another name change, the force became the Australian Capital Territory Police.
In 1932 the Commonwealth Police (FCT) established a presence at Jervis
Bay. By international convention all capital cities must have a port and Jervis
Bay was deemed to be a part of the Federal Capital Territory for this reason.
