The design competition for the National Police Memorial was launched on Wednesday 2 March 2005 at Parliament House by the Federal Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator the Hon. Christopher Ellison. When the competition closed on 29 April 2005 seventy-seven entries had been received.

The winning design for the National Police Memorial by Brisbane firm Fairweather Proberts Architects with Urban Art Projects (UAP) was announced by the Minister on behalf of the Australasian Police Ministers' Council on 22 June 2005. Construction commenced in March 2006.

The $2.4 million memorial was jointly funded by the Australian Government (through the Australian Federal Police), state and territory police services and the Police Federation of Australia.

The National Police Memorial was dedicated on Police Remembrance Day 29 September 2006.
