Bertillon's anthropometry

VIC 1900
Victoria Police Museum

The 'Bertillonage' body-measuring kit was adopted worldwide as a system to identify criminals through their exact body measurements. The system was invented by Alphonse Bertillon, French policeman, in 1882 and published in 1893 as 'Identification anthropometrique'. The measurements were taken from such parts of the body as the skull were very useful, but the system was not as foolproof as fingerprinting, which eventually displaced it. Bertillon also pioneered the standardised criminal mug shot and crime scene photography procedures.
