Special Constables leaving for Kalgoorlie 1934

WA 1934
Western Australia Police and WA Police Historical Society

Since the early 1900s there had been religious and racial tensions between various sections of the Gold? elds population. There was resentment among miners of ‘British Australian’ origin against those from other European countries for accepting lower wages in order to gain employment. A death in a hotel brawl sparked a public explosion of violence in January 1934. Mobs of ‘British Australians’ ransacked and burned hotels, boarding houses and clubs. The Kalgoorlie police were hopelessly outnumbered. Heroic efforts were made to stop
the violence. The police saved both lives and property during a number
of incidents.
