First Inspector General, NSW Police

NSW 1850

In 1850 the Parliament in Sydney legislated to amalgamate all the various colonial police forces into one force and William Spain was appointed as the first Inspector General of Police. This legislation was disallowed by the Parliament in London and the amalgamations did not take place, even though the Inspector General remained. It was 1862 before the NSW Police Force was finally officially established.
