A strike by civilian watchmen at a munitions explosives factory in Melbourne in 1932 resulted in the formation of the Defence Establishment Guard (DEG). It started with 33 officers guarding defence establishments in Victoria and New South Wales. Members of DEG were sworn in under provisions of the Peace Officer Act and only acted on breaches of Commonwealth law.
