The Petrov defection

NT 1954

The defection of Russian spy Vladimir Petrov and his wife Evdokia in 1954 was the biggest Cold War case in Australia. Police intercepted Russian agents taking Mrs Petrov out of the country in Darwin, and she decided to stay with her husband. Following their defection the Petrovs became Australian citizens and lived in Bentleigh, Melbourne, in a home bought with the 5,000 pounds they received from the Australian Government. They lived as 'Sven and Anna Allyson' under the protection of a D-Notice - an agreement between media and Government to protect their identity and privacy. Vladimir died in 1991. Evdokia outlived her husband by 11 years and died in 2002 at the age of 87.
