Howe was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant Third Class and awarded the Queens Medal for Gallantry. His death led to the issue of obsolete ?rearms being raised at the 1964 Police Association Conference, and the adoption of the Smith & Wesson.38 calibre revolver as the standard police sidearm in NSW.
